Fiebing’s has been the tack-room standard since 1895. Yellow saddle soap is the cleaning step — used before conditioning to remove sweat salt, trail dust, and surface grime that would otherwise get ground into the leather during the conditioning pass. The glycerin base is gentle enough for daily tack cleaning on working saddles and bridles and won’t strip the oils that vegetable-tanned leather depends on.

The routine: dampen a natural sponge or cloth, work a thin lather onto the leather surface in circular motion, wipe clean with a damp cloth. Let dry to room temperature. Then condition with Bick 4 or neatsfoot oil. Two products, twelve minutes, done. The saddle soap is the step most people skip — and skipping it means conditioning on top of grime, which doesn’t actually protect the leather.

For saddles, boots, and bridles that see regular use, a saddle soap pass once a month and a conditioner pass twice a year is the right cadence. See our complete leather care guide for the full protocol.
