A lead rope is the piece of horse gear that gets handled more than anything else in a day’s work — catching, tying, leading, picket line, vet work. Poly braid holds up to mud, water, and UV better than cotton. It doesn’t rot, doesn’t stiffen in cold weather the way a cotton rope does, and the stiffness of solid braid makes it easier to handle than a limp twisted rope.
The bull snap — the spring-loaded clip with the trigger release — opens reliably one-handed, which matters when your other hand is holding a horse. At 225 lb rating it won’t fail under working load. Check the snap mechanism when you get it and keep it clean; a snap that freezes up in January is a problem.
Ten feet is the standard working length for ground handling. For picket line and highline use, see the 40-foot cotton lash rope and the setup in the horseback camping guide.
