Hide & Drink makes full-grain leather goods by hand in Guatemala using vegetable-tanned leather and waxed thread. The A5 cover fits a Leuchtturm 1917 hardcover notebook exactly, the notebook most serious daily writers use, with numbered pages, an index, and ink-resistant paper that handles a good pen without bleed-through.
The leather is bourbon brown, which is the color it starts at. It darkens and develops a patina over months of back-pocket and shirt-pocket carry. Vegetable tanning is the old method, slower, more expensive than chrome tanning, and it produces leather that ages into character rather than cracking and flaking. At five years the cover looks better than it did new.
On a working ranch, the practical case is straightforward: pasture rotation notes, calf weights, breeding dates, vet visit records, water-source observations. A leather cover that survives barn pockets and weathered hands for a decade is a tool, not a decoration. The Leuchtturm insert gets replaced when it fills up, a new one is $20. The cover is indefinite.
Sizing note: fits Leuchtturm 1917 A5 hardcover only (5.75 by 8.25 inches). Moleskine Large is a slightly different dimension and fits loosely. If you use Moleskine, size down to the Medium or go with the A5 Leuchtturm, it’s the better notebook anyway.
