Lodge has been casting iron at the same foundry in South Pittsburg, Tennessee since 1896. The camp Dutch oven — the legged version with a flanged lid — is the specific design for fire and charcoal cooking outdoors. Three legs lift the pot over coals. The flanged lid holds coals on top, creating heat from above and below simultaneously. That’s what produces even baking heat in a camp fire context.
The 5-quart is the right size for four to six people at a base camp. Standard camp Dutch oven recipes — biscuits, cornbread, stews, cobblers — are designed for this size. Pre-seasoned from the factory; season additionally with a few cooking passes before your first camp trip.
Dutch oven cooking is actively practiced on working Wyoming ranches in a way that has mostly disappeared elsewhere. A Lodge camp Dutch oven is one of the few gifts in the ranch wife’s gift guide that arrives with no aesthetic risk — the recipient already knows exactly where it goes and what she’s making in it first.
