The 13MWZ is built to a different geometry than any contemporary jean on the market. The rise sits at 11-1/8 inches measured at the front, which means these actually hit your natural waist, not your hip. The seat and thigh are cut full on purpose, so you can sit deep in a saddle without the denim pulling across your lap. The leg opens at 16-3/4 inches, wide enough to stack cleanly over a cowboy boot heel without bunching under the shaft. Wrangler has been cutting this pattern since Ben “Rodeo Ben” Lichtenstein designed it in 1947, and it’s been the official ProRodeo competition jean ever since. That’s not marketing. That’s 75 years of cowboy feedback with no reason to change it.
Compare it to the 936 Cowboy Cut and the difference is clear: the 936 runs slimmer through the seat and thigh, reads more contemporary in a bar or restaurant, and has less room once you’re on a horse. The 13MWZ is the working version. If you spend time in the saddle, it’s the one. The prewashed indigo wash breaks in softer than the rigid blue, takes a week or two before it stops feeling stiff, and ends up at a shade of medium indigo that reads fine from the ranch to a steakhouse dinner.
Sizing: waist measurement is accurate, same as your regular pants size. The inseam runs long and most guys stack it. If you want a clean break over your boot, buy your actual inseam or go up one inch and plan to hem. See the Western dress code guide for how these fit into working dress versus town dress in Wyoming.
