Stetson has been making felt hats in the United States since John B. Stetson set up shop in Philadelphia in 1865. The Open Road is their signature working shape — a moderate 4-inch crown, C-crease, 3-inch brim, proportions that work on horseback and in a dinner booth without looking like a costume in either setting.

The 4X rating refers to the quality of the fur felt: at this price point you get a hat that holds its shape through seasons of wear and weather, takes a crease well, and can be re-blocked by a hatter when it finally needs it. Silverbelly is the classic Western working color — light enough to handle heat, neutral enough to work with everything in the wardrobe.

Buffalo felt is warmer and more water-resistant than rabbit felt. It has a denser, slightly rougher hand that stiffens the brim naturally. A quality felt hat can last decades with basic care: brush it with a soft hat brush (counter-clockwise), store brim-down or on a hat rack, and keep it away from sustained rain — a brief shower won’t hurt it, but soaking will. See the Western dress code guide for how the Open Road fits different contexts.
